Notes for VINCENT BOISSONNEAULT:
Vincent-Nicolas Boissoneau's Story includes few details of his life before he reached Canada. What we do know is that he was a member of the Carignan Regiment, a veteran of the wars in France and Germany. Demobilized men. who served in the campaigns and wished to settle in Canada were invited to re-enlist. Vincent seemingly chose this course. Under the leadership of Captain Maximy, Boissoneau and his company arrived in Canada in September 1665.
24 January 1666 finds Vincent - Nicolas at Trois-Rivieres, a part of the three companies who had to brave extremely cold temmperatures to make a dangerous journey across Lac Saint-Pierre in an attempt to reach Fort Richelieu. On 30 January, those who successfully made the trip again had to set out, this time for Fort Saint-Therese, from where they attacked the Mohawk villages.
At the end of the conflict, Vincent - Nicolas mustered out and decided to make his home in the colony. For this , he was given 100 francs from the King. While awaiting to choose a bride, one of the young ladies brought to Canada for this purpose (known to us as "The King's Daughters), Boissoneau settled on the Ile d'Orleans. This island was familiar territory to Vincent-Nicolas as he was billeted there with his company.
On 18 october 1669, Vincent-Nicolas chose Anne Colin to be his wife. they were married in the church at Ste-Famille on Ile d'Oreleans. A week later, Roman Bequet, the notary, drew up the marriage contract. It was recorded by the notary that the groom was the son of the late Jean Boissonneau and of Jeanne Cochin from the parish of Saint-Seurin in the town of Mortagne, diocese of Saintes. The bride was born at Sainte-Croix de Sers in Orleanais, the daughter of Nicolas Colin and Isabelle Calende. Anne brought to the marriage a dowry of approximately 200 livres in addition to the fifty livres she received from the King.
During the first few years of their marriage, little was written about the newlyweds. Vincent was undoubtedly strengthening his land holdings. Around April of 1674, Vincent-Nicolas acquired from Guy Boidin, a fellow veteran from the Maximy Company, a piece of land with 3 arpents frontage in the parish of St. Jean.
1678 was a tragic year for the Boissonneau's. By then the family had grown to include five children: Elizabeth born in 1670, Jeanne born in 1672, Phillippe born in 1673, Anne born in 1676, and Rene born in 1678. On August third, a tragedy that would test the faith and courage of any parent occurred. The three yougest children burned to death in a fire. No other details of the event are ever mentioned, but we can only imagine the sorrow they felt.
The 1681 census gives us more information about the family. Vincent was then 44 years old; and Anne ten years younger. They were living in the county of St. Laurent; owned three head of cattle; and had five arpents of land under cultivation. By this time the family had been blessed with two additional children, Jean at two years, and Jacques at two months.
Twelve children were born to the Boissonneau family over the years. Three previously stated died in a tragic fire. Four others also led very short lives: Jacques born in 1681, probably died in the cradle; Louis, born in 1683 died in 1685 at the age of 17 months; an unnamed son was born and died on the same day in 1688; and finally Vincent, born in 1692, probably died a short time after his birth.
Of thier five remaining children, Elizabeth married Rene Favreau dit Deslauriers in 1694; Jeanne-Marie married Jean-Baptiste Gelinas dit Bellemare in 1700; Jean married Marguerite Choret in 1707; Nicolas married Jeanne Poisson in 1709; and Jean-Pierre married Catherine-Marguerite Choret in 1707. Jean Pierre unfortunately caused his family problems his entire life because he was an "idiot et tombait du haut mal" (suffered from epileptic seizures).
In the year 1707, on 1 August, Vincent sent for his eldest son , Jean, by then a resident of Yamachiche. He then transferred the three arpent property he had acquired some 33 years earlier. Two thirds of his property including livestock and a house were ceded with the intent that Jean would care for his parents as was the custom of that time. This property acquired and toiled over so diligently remained in the Boissonneau family untill the beginning of the Nineteenth Century.
Vincent lived untill the age of eighty. He died on 13 September 1715; and was buried at St-Jean. Anne joined her husband nearly four years later; at the age of about 75. She died on 28 July 1719; and was buried the next day.
The Boissonneau legacy lives on today; and can be found in different places carried on by people bearing the names Boisson, Boissonneault, Boissonnault, Boissonnere, and Saintonge, as well as Saint-Onge, St.-Onge and Xaintonge.
